Another Milestone: We Hit the Century Mark!

For the first time ever, the Piedmont Pet Pantry provided food to 100 families at a single distribution. On November 13th at the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry Distribution, a record number of families turned out to receive assistance feeding their dogs and cats. The pet food bank's previous record for a single distribution was 79 families.

A way for state employees to show support!

Leaders with the Piedmont Pet Pantry say incoming donations are not keeping up with demand from area residents who are too poor to buy pet food.

“Despite generous donations from individuals and businesses, the need for the pet food bank’s services continues to grow at a faster rate than the increase in food and monetary donations,” the pet pantry said in a statement.

Piedmont Pet Pantry is a project of the local Extra Mile Dog Rescue and is operated by volunteers.

In its first month of operation, in spring 2009, nearly 2,000 pounds of dog and cat food were distributed to more than 60 families, according to the nonprofit. In August of this year, more than 7,000 pounds of pet food were distributed to more than 200 families.

The pet pantry aims to provide temporary assistance to financially strapped pet owners in the area who might otherwise, for example, surrender their pets to crowded local shelters.

The Piedmont Pet Pantry’s first Big Fall Pet Food Drive will be held from Sunday to Oct. 24. Dog and cat food will be accepted during business hours at Pampered Pets, Albemarle Veterinary Care Center and Pet Supplies Plus, as well as at the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center in Lovingston and the Old Dominion National Bank and Grace Episcopal Church, both in North Garden.

Donors can also drop off donations from noon to 3 p.m. during the drive at PetSmart in the Hollymead Town Center.
